Can ADAS Calibration Be Done Mobile?

By NOS Diagnostics & Calibrations · Published

At a glance

Often, but not always. “Mobile” describes where the work happens; “static” and “dynamic” describe how. A dynamic procedure can usually be started on site if road and weather conditions fit. A static procedure can be done mobile only when the procedure's equipment and workspace conditions can actually be met at that location. We confirm this for each vehicle before scheduling.

Educational guidance only. Exact requirements depend on current manufacturer service information for the vehicle.

Location versus method

Mobile, in-shop, static and dynamic
TermMeaning
MobileWe bring the equipment to your shop, dealership or other location.
In-shopThe vehicle comes to our Garland location for a controlled workspace.
StaticA method: the camera or radar is aimed at a target in a controlled space.
DynamicA method: a manufacturer-prescribed road learning procedure completed in specified conditions, with diagnostic-tool initiation or monitoring where required.

So the right question is not “mobile or static?” but “can this vehicle's procedure be done properly at this location?”

What a static procedure needs from the space

Each manufacturer sets its own conditions, and they vary by vehicle and system. Typical requirements include:

  • Enough clear space around the vehicle for the target to be placed where the procedure says.
  • A floor that is level, or within the tolerance the procedure allows.
  • Lighting that is even and free of glare, and a background without clutter or reflective objects behind the target.
  • Vehicle preparation the procedure lists, such as specific loading or tire conditions.

What a dynamic procedure needs

Dynamic procedures are completed on the road, so they depend on conditions such as clearly marked lanes, suitable traffic and acceptable weather. The specifics come from the procedure. Rain, faded markings or heavy congestion can delay or prevent completion, which is why a dynamic job may need to be rescheduled.

When we recommend our Garland bay

We may recommend bringing the vehicle to our Garland location when the static procedure needs more controlled space, lighting or floor conditions than the site offers, or when several systems need to be done together. This is a recommendation about meeting the procedure's conditions, not a claim that every static procedure must be done in our bay.

What we ask for before scheduling

  1. The VIN and the systems or repairs involved.
  2. The vehicle's location.
  3. What work has been performed, and whether the vehicle is mechanically ready.
  4. Photos of the available workspace, if we ask for them.

We confirm whether the job can be done mobile before booking. Not every vehicle or site will be suitable.

Questions

Is dynamic calibration the same as mobile calibration?
No. Dynamic is a method; mobile is a location. A dynamic procedure can be done after mobile service or after in-shop service.
Can static calibration be done at my shop?
Sometimes. It depends on whether your space meets the procedure's requirements for that vehicle. We may ask for photos to check.
What if the weather is bad on the day?
Dynamic procedures may not complete in poor conditions. We will reschedule or suggest an alternative if the procedure allows one.
